Supplier Kopra

A copra buyer’s notebook

Know your supplier first, then sign the copra contract

Copra suppliers often answer fast and rarely in writing. These general industry notes turn that chat into questions to ask, proof you may request, and the clauses that belong on paper.

Sweet supplier promises? Ask for them in writing.

White, black, run-of-mine: three names, not always one meaning

The market uses these names loosely. Ask how the copra was dried, and get the definition in writing before you compare two offers.

  • White copra

Sun-dried (North Maluku) or oven-dried (Selayar, Madura); the meaning differs by region.

  • Black or smoked copra

Dried over smoke from a kiln.

  • Run-of-mine copra (asalan)

No single method; a trade word.

The supplier evaluation checklist

Nineteen questions in seven groups. The first six are the ones to use earliest, before you ask for a sample. Ask in writing; a spoken answer blows away like the weather.

  1. Company name, the person responsible for sales, and the address of the warehouse or drying site.Business identity papers and a dated photo of the warehouse.
  2. Is the stock the supplier’s own, or passed on from another collector?A written answer and the name of the source warehouse if passed on.
  3. Area of origin and harvest period of the offered lot.A written statement per lot, not per supplier.
  4. White, black or run-of-mine copra? Dried how, and for how long?A description of the process; a photo of the drying floor or smoke kiln if there is one.
  5. How the copra is stored and for how long before dispatch. The date the lot you want entered the warehouse.
  6. Is the sample drawn from the lot to be shipped, not from a hand-picked pile?A lot number and a seal on the sample bag, or photos of the drawing.

Two ready-to-use lists, and Kora copra, one of the producers discussed.

Which link of the chain do you buy from?

The longer the chain, the more often a lot turns out to be a blend. A supplier who does not know where a lot came from cannot promise the next one either.

  1. FarmerHarvests, splits and dries, or sells the nuts.
  2. Village collectorBuys from many farmers; lots start to blend here.
  3. District collectorConsolidates loads from several villages.
  4. WholesalerHolds a warehouse and sells to mills or inter-island traders.
  5. MillReceives, tests, and cuts the price when quality falls short.

Contract clauses you should not leave to “custom”

A clear price with a vague way of weighing is as risky as a vague price.
