Chapter 06
Field terms in the copra trade
A small glossary so you do not misread an offer. Meanings differ from area to area, so write your chosen definition into the contract.
| Term | Usual meaning | Note for the buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Kopra putih | White copra: sun-dried in North Maluku; oven or indirectly dried in Selayar and Madura. | Ask what colour and defect limits the supplier means. |
| Kopra hitam / asap | Black or smoked copra: dried over smoke. | Ask whether your end buyer accepts a smoke odour. |
| Kopra asalan | A trader’s word for mixed, unsorted copra. | There is no standard definition; write one into the contract. |
| Pengumpul | A small buyer who gathers copra from farmers or lower collectors. | Ask how many lots are merged into one load. |
| Pedagang besar | A warehouse-holding wholesaler selling to mills or between islands. | Usually the party that issues a written offer. |
| Harga gudang | The price for goods at the seller’s warehouse. | Not a delivered price; haulage and shrinkage are not in it. |
| Karantina | The agency that inspects pest-carrying material moving between regions or being exported. | Ask whether your lot needs a quarantine letter. |
| OPTK | Quarantine plant-pest organisms that officers check for. | Appears on inspection papers, not in trade offers. |
